Sierra Leone

Rare Pygmy Hippopotamus & Primate Excursion

Depart the ship by motorboat to Tiwai Island – a wildlife sanctuary that is part of a community conservation program.  We motor down its Moa River to see the elusive and rare pygmy hippo’s.  The jungle tour includes sightings of some of the rarest primates on earth.  We move silently through the stillness and also enjoy the musical singing of rare hornbill birds as well.  The tour leaves each day that we are on Freetown because the groups need to be small to adequately enjoy the overall experience.  Not many people have been this close to these rare beasts.   Return to the ship late each at night.

Tacugama Chimp Sanctuary

We drive via 4WD vehicle 2 hours north of Freetown.  This sanctuary is committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned and abandoned chimpanzees.  This 100 acre park features these beings in various stages of age and needs.  This educational visit will leave you with an appreciation for the organizations that care and love for God’s creatures.

 Tiwai Island Birding Safari

What fun!  An amazing day of discovery is before you today.  Sierra Leone is home to many very rare birds.   It will be like a safari in itself – but seeking our friends in the air!   You will search out the Rufous Fishing Owl, the Gola Malimbe and Nimba Flycatcher and so much more!   And, aside from the birds you will see and hunt out 6 various primates including the Western Chimpanzee who actually uses tools to exist.  This all day experience is a photographers dream.

 Bunce Island

This island is the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa.  It exported tens of thousands of African captives to North America and the West Indies.  The Gullah people who came from here have preserved their African culture in an amazing way.  In 1989, a US Park Service team visited Bunce Island and issued a management plan for its preservation because it is so closely linked to North America.  The island has close ties to South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and most recently records were uncovered that showed slave ships also delivered people to Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts.   There is a wonderful rice plantation that we visit for a great view of history that affected so many.  We will send you advance information for study prior to the trip that will make this tour come alive.   Click here for more information.

Scuba Diving, Snorkel or Spear Fishing

Sierra Leone has amazingly beautiful islands.   Dive, snorkel and spear fishing trips are arranged daily to Barracuda Island, Banana Island & Maroon Island.  The fishing trips can be combined with dive or snorkel trips and both include sack lunch for the day.  Bring your catch back and our chef will prepare an amazing meal for you and your new friends!
