We midwife dying back into living.
Living Passages began in 2007 around a kitchen table in the Pacific Northwest, when three hospice nurses, a home-funeral guide and a conservation burial advocate asked: what if death stayed home? What if children could place flowers on grandmother, neighbors could sit through the night, and the body could return to soil without poison or steel?
Today we are a community nonprofit stewarding education, direct family support and land conservation. We train death doulas and home-funeral stewards, accompany families by phone and bedside, protect natural burial grounds, and hold grief as a communal art — not a pathology.

Philosophy
Death is not a failure
We treat dying as a developmental passage — like birth — deserving slowness, beauty, witness and consent.
Ecology
Burial as planting
One conventional burial emits ~250kg CO2 and leaches formaldehyde. One green burial plants natives and protects ¼ acre.
Community
It takes a village, again
We rebuild the village around the deathbed: rotas for sitting, meals, childcare, paperwork and song.

Costs, honestly
Home vigil guidance: donation-based ($0–$800 suggested). Pine casket: $600–$1,200. Green burial plot: $1,500–$4,500. No embalming, no vault, no upsell. We publish every price.
Legal in your state?
Yes. Family-led after-death care is legal everywhere in the US. Some states need a funeral director signature for transport or filing — we handle that for $150–$300 and stay with you.

Is a home funeral really legal?
Yes — in all 50 states you may keep, wash and transport your own dead. Most families need: death certificate signed by doctor/hospice, transit permit from vital records, and a plan for cooling (dry ice + fans). We walk you through county by county.
Do we need embalming or refrigeration?
No. For a 1–3 day vigil, dry ice (30–40 lbs per day) under torso + cool room works beautifully. Embalming is never required by law for viewing, burial or transport within state.
What does green burial cost?
Typically $2,500–$6,500 total vs $9,000–$15,000 conventional. Plot + opening/closing + simple container. Our meadow partners reinvest fees into land trust.
Can children be present?
Please include them — with choice and preparation. Children who are allowed to touch, draw, ask and leave freely grieve healthier. We provide age-by-age scripts.
We are not religious. Is this for us?
Absolutely. Half our families are secular, a quarter interfaith, a quarter rooted practice. We build ritual from your music, poems, food and place — not dogma.
How fast can you help if death is near?
Call anytime. A steward responds within hours, overnight for active dying. If you have 20 minutes, we can set cooling, paperwork and vigil rota today.
